History of the SAM
The S.A.M. was founded in 1902 to further the art of magic
by promoting fellowship and unity among its practitioners and by opposing the unnecessary exposure of magical secrets.
History
The Society of American Magicians was formed in 1902 by a group of
magicians that met in Martinka's magic shop in New York City. A year later the group was joined by history's most famous stage
magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. Houdini would later become the president and remain so for 9 years until his death
in 1926.
Assembly 38 of the S.A.M. was first formed in 1944 and was called
at first simply the "Kansas City Assembly" then later the "Harry Otto Assembly". It disbanded in 1981.
The assembly was started up again in 1991 and is still going strong.
The name of the assembly is the "Robert Klamm Assembly" in honor of the person instrumental in its revival. Robert Klamm is
still an active member of the club.

Why We Meet
At meetings the members discuss special events and other business,
hear from local magic dealers and see some demonstrations of new magical effects, then get down to the real fun of performing,
teaching, and learning effects and techniques. The members cover a wide range of abilities from professional magicians to
people just interested in the art. Performance is not mandatory but is encouraged. The atmosphere is light and supportive
and it a great place to try out new effects or to perform for the first time.
Besides the monthly meetings other activities include...
- Bringing in various lecturers on the art of magic.
- Putting on an annual stage show called "The Stars of Magic" to raise
money for the club.
- An annual banquet at which we have a nice dinner and see some magic.
- Occasional special projects like staging a full-blown magic convention
called the Klamm Bake which brought in big names like Aldo Columbini, Johnny "Ace" Palmer, and Daryl to perform and to teach.
When We Meet
The Assembly meets the Third Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm unless rescheduling or canceling
the meeting is necessary due to some conflict or special event.
